Fuelling For Optimal Health and Performance

a talk by Emma McCrudden

Our knowledge about food and nutritional sciences has increased dramatically over recent decades and yet we seem to be even more confused about what should be on our plate. In 2017, globally, 11 million deaths were attributable to dietary risk factors. Obesity and its associated metabolic disorders, including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver disease, are somewhat preventable with diet and exercise strategies. Notably, the Mediterranean diet has received high praise for its role in reducing heart disease, stroke and overall mortality. In the high performance sport environment athletes face unique challenges including demanding training and competition schedules, frequent travel, illness, injury, stress and financial pressures. Many athletes are fortunate to receive education in a range of sports science supports in order to manage these challenges - including in the area of nutrition. So what can we learn from high performance athletes and their nutrition plans? Is there truly a “right” way to eat?

Emma McCrudden qualified as a dietitian from the University of Ulster and later completed a master’s degree at Loughborough University in sports nutrition and exercise physiology. She provided nutrition support as part of the multidisciplinary sports science and sports medicine team for the English Institute of Sport (2008–2013) and was the lead dietitian for Leinster Rugby based in Dublin, Ireland (2010–2013). She moved to Canada in 2013 where she joined the Canadian Sport Institute and provided support for various national teams including the Canadian Women's Soccer team and Swim team in preparation for the Rio Olympic Games. In 2016 she was appointed to a newly created position evenly divided between the school as lecturer in sport and exercise nutrition, and the Department of Athletics as sport dietitian for UBC Thunderbird Varsity athletes. She also provided consultancy services to the Vancouver Whitecaps. In January 2022 she was appointed as a full time faculty member to the School of Kinesiology of the University of British Columbia.

Organized by

ARPICO (Associazione di Ricercatori e Professionisti Italiani nel Canada Occidentale) or “Society of Italian Researchers and Professionals in Western Canada” was founded in 2011. ARPICO advocates and promotes public awareness of science, innovation and research activities involving, where possible but not exclusively, Italo-Canadian and/or Italian researchers and professionals; and, ARPICO supports the education and professional development of young researchers and innovators. We are proud to partner with institutions of scholarly activity in providing scholarship and research exchanges between Canada and Italy. Become a member - you do not have to be of Italian ancestry to join ARPICO. Membership dues and donations supply the Society with seed money for event programming like public lectures. ARPICO organizes and hosts public lectures, cafes and debates in the community featuring a roster of influential experts from around Canada and abroad. Successful events attract the attention of the public and help expand our membership base with new members, who also want to spread the science-innovation-research message and support young researchers and innovators with their careers. Enlisting greater numbers of members not only helps underwrite expanded event programming, but also supplies ARPICO with more talent, more contacts, more energy, all of which increase ARPICO’s ability to find and secure more scholarship funding from governments, foundations and businesses.
